After the bleak, unsettling news stories of early 2009 we are ready for some good news. Is there any? Of course there is. Yes, there are still awful things happening in the business world – the General Motors struggles, unemployment numbers and budget shortfalls are just some of the front page stories. But there are other stories out there. The stories of people making a difference in big and small ways. What are individuals and teams doing in your organization that you can highlight and celebrate? Emphasize the positive and presto – you increase momentum. So often leaders neglect this powerful opportunity to ignite small sparks into large flames. Quick Positive Feedback Model – Observation, Impact
Let people know specifically, sincerely and with gratitude. In our Intentional Act of Character we talk about some amazing leaders. These folks not only go uncelebrated but are sometimes criticized. What courage to keep on doing the right thing. Intentional Act of Leadership Character Corinne Seminoff produced a riveting documentary on the Hobbema cadets. The two RCMP Officers, Sgt. Mark A. Linnell and Cst. Richard D. Huculiak are heroes. Corinne’s document was aired on CBC Sunday http://www.cbc.ca/sunday/2009/05/051009_4.html. The cadet’s website is www.hobbemacadets.net Les Young, Inspector with 4 District of York Regional Police, not only knows about the Hobbema cadets, but describes one of the projects our police support. Constable Davis Ahlowalia regularly visited an orphanage in Kingston, Jamaica. Inspired by his work, York Regional Police adopted the orphanage, Missionaries of the Poor. On January 6, 2007, Davis was tragically killed in a motor vehicle collision. The police have continued Davis’ dream of helping orphans and seniors of the Mission by raising funds and awareness of their needs. York Regional Police collects food, money and other essentials such as baby food, diapers, toiletries and cleaning supplies. In September 2007 a contingent of 17 YRP members including Davis’ brother and mother traveled to the Missionaries of the Poor in Kingston, Jamaica. They worked in the community building, distributing goods and with the children. The group also traveled to Jamaica in August of 2008. Follow the link for details of that trip. Additional contingents traveled to Jamaica to provide on the ground assistance. St. Joan of Arc School, Rotary Club, Friends of the Poor, Jamaican Canadians Association, MACA, as well as the York Regional Police, under the director of Chief Armand La Barge, continue to support the Mission with money, goods and hands on work.
In a time when the latest engagement reports from Towers Perrin (2007 – 2008) tells us that number 3 of the Top Ten Global Drivers is “the Organization’s reputation for social responsibility,” these actions are not only generous and heartwarming, but also support employee engagement and organizational results. This is good news in every sense of the word. Please let us know your results from offering positive intentional feedback at kr@centreforcharacterleadership.com!
