Your Character – The Heart of Your Leadership

"The time is always right to do what is right."
Martin Luther King, Jr.
(1929-1968)

Do the right thing. Sounds easy. Isn’t always. It demands good information, reflection and confidence.

It is also often time consuming, potentially politically in astute, sometimes unpopular and frequently expensive to do the right thing.

Leaders are often more appreciated in retrospect for making difficult choices. One of the many reasons why leadership is challenging.

Think of Jean Chrétien’s stand to not send our troops to Iraq. Time has proven that controversial choice to be one of the most cited and appreciated resolves of his leadership. That one decision flavoured his legacy.

You are your character. You know (or should) why you do what you do. You work hard to be intentional and manage your thoughts and feelings to lead in alignment with your intention (core beliefs, values and goals). This is called authentic, inside out leadership. Much more powerful and sustainable than pandering to the popularity vote or the buzz-flavour of the month.

And that is why character is at the heart of our leadership resources. Here is an example of character at work.

Intentional Act of Character

South Lake Community Futures Development Corporation is a not-for-profit community based organization providing a variety of small business and community economic development services within the towns of East Gwillimbury, Georgina as well as Brock Township. South Lake CFDC operates under a contract from Industry Canada/ FedNor to provide community futures programming to these communities.

The community based organization, comprised of a fiscally responsible and business-oriented Board of Directors and staff, endeavors to foster job creation and support for new and established businesses in the community.

Their mission includes the provision of loans as well as a broad range of other financial services, business counseling and community economic development activities.

Individuals and small businesses regularly apply to this organization for loans and grants. The Board of Directors, which is comprised of volunteers (local business people), review the applications and attend intensive meetings to decide who will receive support.

The Board, under the leadership of Nick Tanquiy, Chair, has a rigorous process for application screening. Rather than indiscriminately disbursing our tax dollars, the Board ensures that applicants have completed a thorough and professional business plan (Peter Budreo, the General Manager offers Business Planning Training Sessions) and meet criteria for sustainable success.

The decisions of this board are not always popular (refused applicants) but making the right decisions has reaped positive results.

The repayment rate for loans is 97% which is commendable given the higher risk, non-bankable clients to whom the organization lends funds.

Some of the more prominent examples of success are: a local septic pumping company and a local landscaping company both of which got their initial funding from South Lake CFDC but now have annual sales in the 7 figure range and have become bankable businesses.

The organization also invested funds into the South Shore Community Broadband project as well as the Georgina Trades Training project and has supported a variety of other local events and attractions such as the Cannington Dog Sled Races and the Georgina Arts Centre and Gallery renovation.
