It is Spring – Can We Breathe?

The world is going on. Times may still be economically uncertain but the birds don’t know it. Spring rituals are well under way. This is a time of rebirth, renewal and a fresh start.

Leaders can harvest the moment by taking a step that never is out of season – letting your people know what you value about them.

Wise leaders let their people know specifically and generously which of their actions make a difference. And reap the rewards in commitment and contribution.

Yes, there is a long and predictable list explaining the paucity of this powerful, motivational and engaging leadership behaviour:

  • Don’t have time
  • Not sure how
  • What will others say?
  • I might sound phony
  • The person might ask for a raise and so on

The truth is people stand straighter, feel more engaged, repeat the behaviour you’re recognizing and will treat your customers (and their colleagues) better.

Intentional Two Step Process for Positive Feedback:

  1. Observation (what they do well) and

  2. Impact (the difference it makes)

If you want your people to be more energized, focused and productive – this is a sound first step.

Ken Blanchard said it well years ago –"Catch someone doing something right."

Leo Buscaglia’s perspective:
"Too often we under estimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around."

Intentional Act of Character

Once a year everyone who works at George Brown’s Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts attends the school's IConnect Conference. It is a day to celebrate working together, get to know each other better and relax away from the pressures of the thousands of aspiring Michael Statlander and Christine Cushings.

The President of the College, Anne Sado and the Dean, John Walker attended the committee organized event as participants.

Suppliers provide sampling of their wares. Laughter and chatter is the order of the day.

Joe Baker, The co-chair of the Organizing Committee was delighted with the outcome of this year’s program, held in Toronto’s Distillery District. Joe says “we are so busy during the school term that we truly need a time to just be together as people. We celebrate our achievements and enjoy each other. It is a really motivational and we all look forward to it.”
