In a recent team building session the leader congratulated his team for their openness. “You tell me the truth, no matter how ugly and keep me going in the right direction. I want to thank you for your honesty and candour. Our success depends on us having the right information.” Nice bit of feedback but the truth is that he is the one that created that culture. This leader knows that the team's reception can be different than his intention. The work is in the discussion to sort it out and reach mutually acceptable solutions. If there was anger or some kind of negative retribution for truth telling, his team members wouldn’t be speaking up. Engagement depends, to a large degree on the trust in the relationship between a leader and his/her employees. Trust is earned. What do you say when you hear the hard stuff?
