Greetings!

Whatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising that tempt you to believe your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires some of the same courage that a soldier needs. Peace has its victories, but it takes brave men and women to win them.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Engagement studies tell us that we want to work with people who work as hard as we do. Enabling poor performance disables your good workers. Yes, it does take time, energy, documentation and persistence to deal with poor performance, but it is worth the effort. You get what you allow.

Tips for Managing Performance

  1. Ensure that the expectations are crystal clear.

  2. Talk in terms of behaviour – say, don’t say, do, don’t do.

  3. Make sure you have provided appropriate training (See our February Newsletter).

  4. Provide rich and generous positive feedback (See our April Newsletter) to encourage and recognize the right results.

  5. Be specific regarding how you expect people to work together (values and attributes such as respect, teamwork, perseverance etc.)

  6. Tell the truth without attacking the person. Focus on achievable improvements.

  7. Employ a consequence if performance doesn’t improve. If you just talk about it nothing will change.

Some people change when they see the light,
others when they feel the heat.
