March 2007

Greetings!

“I don’t have time to spend with my direct reports.  We are too busy getting the work done.”  A common refrain. And work is speeding up. Let’s talk about options.

In January the topic was setting clear performance expectations.  In February the focus was on training people so they can do what is expected of them.  This month, March, the subject is communication – ensuring your people get the right information to stay focused, engaged and energized.

I will always remember working for PepsiCo – on the restaurant side. My leader, Patrick McCann scheduled our first one on one conversation early in the going.  Pat had a file for every one of his direct reports and asked us to prepare and keep track of our meetings.

Pat updated us on pertinent information and offered honest, balanced feedback.  He also asked for feedback on his skills as a leader.  I left that meeting flabbergasted.  Never in my working life had I experienced such rich, frank, two way communication.

Our meetings took place regularly. He knew what we were doing in the field. His phone call to some remote town before a training session was encouraging and motivating.  The significant and authentic communication flow strengthened our relationship, our work and our results.  Pat was never too busy to harness the energy of his team.

John P. Kotter, the business writer said:
"Without credible communication, and a lot of it, employee hearts and minds are never captured."

The last note for the month is to make a brief announcement.  We are fortunate to be forming a new arm of our business called the Centre for Character Leadership.

We are pleased to announce that Don Cousens, who has earned a stellar reputation as a leader in the political arena, business world, and community as well as current chair of World Vision and the Character Community Movement, has joined our team.  Don is available to consult with the leadership of organizations who wish to inculcate character into their workplace.

Lois Tori, after more than 15 years of senior leadership in the financial world has joined us as a coach, consultant and facilitator.  Lois is Chair of the Character Business Committee and has an international reputation as a business woman and community leaders of “good character.”  Lois brings a program called “Ethics in Business” to the Centre.

We are delighted Don and Lois have decided to contribute their wisdom and energy to our team.

In April – our newsletter focuses on building on the strengths of your people. We will drill down on the notion of offering positive.  Have a terrific end of winter month!
