June 2007 |
Greetings! June is a month of endings. Graduations everywhere. Associations hold wrap up meetings for the summer. Companies often landmark the first half of the year. We prepare for the annual hiatus of holidays, summer hours, kind weather and a time to breathe more freely. It is a time to celebrate progress at work. And like any special moment, there is an opportunity to build or to damage the engagement level of your team. Coaching clients tell me about leaders who recognize them specifically and generously – and their efforts feel worthwhile. They are further engaged and ready to tackle the balance of the year. Conversely, I hear stories of painful moments of feeling ignored, marginalized and contributions unheralded. Experience tells me that leaders don’t overlook anyone intentionally; it is just that they are running so hard. And it is easy to miss what their team is doing/contributing in the flurry of events. And if your leader doesn’t know what you are doing/contributing, everyone is vulnerable, unfocused and possibly mal aligned. So here is my “engagement wish” for leaders – think carefully about who deserves to be recognized for work well done. Let them know specifically, generously, sincerely and if appropriate, publicly, how much you value them and their contribution. You have a special opportunity to further engage and energize your team. Carpe Diem! The word "appreciation" means to be thankful and express admiration, approval, or gratitude. It also means to grow or appreciate in value. As you appreciate life, you become more valuable—both to yourself and others. Sara
