February 2007

Greetings!

Training Time

Media is brimming with suggestions on how to lose holiday weight and get in shape for summer. This is the time of year when we are focused on preparing for the future. So it is with training. Last month we talked about performance appraisals (January Newsletter) and now let’s focus on how people develop the skills to produce results.

 Training Tips

  1. Learning Objectives. The person should be able to do something different as a result of this investment. Clarify learning objectives for all concerned.

  1. Just in Time versus Just in Case.  Years ago training programmes were offered to everyone in the organization, just in case they might find the learning useful. In 2007 we have the best educated workforce of all time. Today’s training dollars are targeted to people who require the specific skill.

  1. Concrete Application.  If the skills are not applied on the job – what value do they have? Assess transfer – following up in the performance appraisal update discussions is one way to ensure application.

  1. What, why and how.  Training clarifies what is expected, why it is important (align with organization, departmental objectives) and how we work together. The person brings their own creativity to the how – as long as the values (respect, honesty etc.) are honoured.

  1. 5 Step Skill Training.  1. Intention – the purpose of this training is... As a result you will be able to    2. Inquire – what does the person know? Is able to do? 3. Demonstrate. Model the skills. 4. Practice. The individual practices. 5. Feedback. Offer feedback on what is well done (generously) and could be improved (carefully). Ongoing feedback helps reinforce new practices.

Just like the preparation for bathing suit exposure, people must find their own learning/improvement style.  We all learn in different ways (hands-on is a safe bet for most of us) and the key is to keep moving forward.  Changing habits/learning requires all of us – our Character. Thoughts, feelings and actions are all implicated. Good leaders offer the learning opportunity, employ best practices, support and follow up to ensure application.

Aldous Huxley
There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving... and that's your own self.
