Winter 2006

Greetings!

Peace at work – shouldn’t it be simple?

After a recent presentation on character in the workplace a participant asked “Isn’t this as simple as treating people as we want to be treated?”

I have heard this question repeatedly over the years.  The maxim works well if everyone wants to, knows how, can manage their emotion and can notice and respond to others appropriately, all the time. The reality is – this isn’t simple.

Given the state of the work world, from the lack of engagement to destructive conflict, this is not the case. Certainly there are workplaces that are highly functioning, enjoyable and dynamically effective. But they are more the exception than the rule. And they are that way due to inspired, healthy leaders who can clearly describe (plus model) acceptable, encouraging, decent, fair, disciplined interaction practices for every member of their organization.

We call these practices “values”, being treated in a way that is valuable to us, or attributes, such as the character attributes of respect, responsibility, courage, fairness, perseverance and so on.  An excellent resource for all these character related attributes can be found at www.charactercommunity.com.

During this season of reflection and celebration I encourage you to think about in what kind of workplace you want to spend your precious time. You deserve to be well treated and by the way, we know that treating people well is good for the bottom line – however you define it.

I wish you a happy workplace. Kindness to each other, careful constructive feedback, heaps of recognition for the good things and enjoyment of all unique and interesting differences.

Have a wonderful holiday season.
