Think about the following – Raising children and never praising achievements or showing concern for failing grades. End result? The child bumps along undirected and unsupported. Or raising a puppy. You ignore the chewing, jumping etc. How will this dog continue to behave? Or seeing a hairstylist. No matter what kind of haircut, you say it is “fine.” The stylist just does what they choose and you live with the choice. It can be the same in the workplace. From the beginning of 2007 we have explored the importance of setting clear, behavioural expectations and providing the tools to keep work aligned with expected results. The ending days of summer are a good time to think about gearing up for the busyness of September. Help your team prepare by letting each person know where they stand. If people don’t realize the impact of their actions, both positively and negatively, they continue to bump along just doing “their best.” It is the responsibility of leaders to notice. To provide encouragement and alignment. Silence breeds mediocrity. ”There is nothing training cannot do. Nothing is above its reach. It can turn bad morals to good; it can destroy bad principles and recreate good ones; it can lift men to angelship.” Mark Twain
